Components for Industrial Safety

In any workplace, but especially those where heavy-duty machinery and equipment is used, worker safety is of an utmost priority. When it comes to selecting switches and components for safety-related applications, there are a variety of styles and configurations that are available. We offer a range of switches that are suited to safety applications, although technical info and compliance should be checked before purchasing any components.

Emergency Stop Switches

One of the most crucial safety components for any piece of machinery is an emergency stop switch. When pressed, these manually actuated safety devices are designed to immediately turn off a machine or system in an emergency or potentially hazardous situation. All industrial machinery requires at least one easily accessible emergency stop button, but more complex machinery may feature multiple e-stops placed at strategic points to stop a specific section or process.

To aid their role as a safety device, e-stops feature a red actuator (usually placed on a contrasting yellow panel) for high visibility and a latching mechanism to keep the switch in place until it is manually reset. These buttons offer a fast and reliable operation and support risk reduction by protecting personnel, products and machinery. We offer both LED illuminated and non-illumated emergency stop buttons, in a range of sizes and styles, with a twist release mechanism.

Safety Limit Switches

Another type of component that can be used to shut down a piece of machinery or system is safety limit switches. These electromechanical devices are able to detect the presence, absence or position of an object, which means that they can be used to monitor the movement of machinery and ensure that it is operating within safe limits. When an object comes into contact with the switch actuator, the limit switch automatically triggers the machinery control system to shut down.

A limit switch designed for safety applications is wired to be normally closed (NC contact), with positive-opening contacts that can be mechanically forced apart, to ensure they disconnect and the system/machine is shut off, even if the contacts have become stuck. These rugged and reliable failsafe switches allow for consistent, tamper-resistant monitoring of machines.

Safety limit switches are commonly found in applications that require precise control of assembly lines and machining tools; such as food & beverage manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and distribution centre conveyor systems.

LED Indicators & Buzzers

Alongside specialised safety switches, LED indicators and buzzers also play an important role in industrial safety. These components are designed to effectively communicate safety-related information to machinery operators, via clear visual or auditory alerts.

If there is a fault within a machine or system, a high visibility LED indicator can deliver an automatic signal to workers (e.g. by changing from green to red), which aids in reducing risks and preventing accidents. In addition to this, indicators can also be used to identify if emergency lighting and power systems are operational if an incident does occur.

Common colours for LED indicators in safety applications are:

  • Red – as a warning of a dangerous situation that requires immediate attention.
  • Yellow – as a warning of an abnormality in the system that may lead to a dangerous incident (e.g. overheating).
  • Green – to indicate that systems are running normally and correctly.

Buzzers serve a very similar purpose to indicators, as they can deliver a clear continuous or discontinuous sound to alert personnel to a problem. This is beneficial in noisy environments and conditions where workers might not have an illuminated indicator in their direct eyeline, as they would still be able to hear the alert or warning over ambient industrial noise. We also offer LED illuminated buzzers, which combine visual and auditory alerts in one component.

Keylock Switches

Keylock switches are another component that can aid in maintaining safety in industrial settings, as they require a key to operate and can therefore only be used by authorised personnel with the key. They are commonly used for large and potentially hazardous pieces of machinery, such as conveyor belts. This is because restricting access to controls prevents any unauthorised use and the potential for accidents to occur as a result of this.

Keylock switches can also be used to reset a machine after the emergency stop switch has been activated.
