Our Guide to Selector Switches

Product

What is a Selector Switch?

A Selector Switch is a type of electromechanical switch that allows you to control an electrical circuit and select between different operational modes by rotating a handle-like actuator.

These switches differ from push buttons, as they feature a rotating cam with ridges and flats to actuate the plungers independently, whereas push buttons have a plate that actuates the contact plungers simultaneously.

As selector switches allow you to switch between multiple positions and modes, this makes them ideal for applications with limited space for buttons or controls. They also have the benefit of offering clear visual feedback to simplify the user experience.

Selector Switches vs Keylock Switches

Keylock Switches have a similar operation to Selector Switches, as they both feature a rotating mechanism and 2 or 3 position configuration, with momentary or latching action. However, as the name suggests, keylocks require a physical key to operate them. This means that they are specifically designed to provide an extra layer of security to the system or device, as they prevent unauthorised or accidental use.

Selector Switches vs Rotary Switches

Rotary Switches are another similar component type to selector switches, but the key difference between them is that rotary switches offer more positions and configurations – often upwards of 10 or more. This means they are more often used to operate devices and systems that have multiple settings or modes, such as radio dials or volume controls. In contrast, selectors offer simplistic control that usually consists of on/off or manual/auto function, etc.

Another difference between the two is that rotary switches provide tactile feedback through detent or clicks, whereas selector switches provide a visual indication of their position, and can also be LED illuminated to make this even clearer.

What are Selector Switches used for?

Industrial Machinery

Ideal for systems that demand safe control of complex functions, typically switching between manual/off/automatic modes for motors or pumps, etc.

Medical Equipment

Common in heavy-duty medical equipment to allow for simple operation in critical conditions, and also found in diagnostic or treatment devices.

Automotive & Marine Controls

Used in many commercial vehicles and watercraft, to control a variety of functions, such as the engine or lights.

Public Spaces

Can be found in commercial or public buildings and parks, to control security systems, lighting and HVAC, etc.

Types of Selector Switches

Anti-Vandal

Our metal anti-vandal selector switches are designed to be durable and hard-wearing, for applications that face more wear and tear or need more robust components.

Plastic

We have a variety of plastic selector switch styles, with IP rated and terminal block mounting options and round, square or rectangular heads.

LED illuminated

Both our plastic and anti-vandal switches are available with optional LED illumination in a range of colours, to make it even easier to see when the switch is in operation.

Summary

Selector Switches are a great alternative to push button switches that still offer ease of use, with improved visibility of operation status. Plus, our 3-position selectors allow you to move between three operational states through one interface.
