Behind the cameras and in front of them – as well as within the cameras themselves – switches are a crucial part of film and television production. Whether you are creating controls for a piece of film equipment, or building a set for the next Hollywood blockbuster, our high quality push buttons and components will help you to bring your project to life.
Set & Prop Design
Whilst CGI has long been an integral part of creating a believable backdrop for films and TV, physical switches and other elements are still integral to set design, as they allow the actors to interact realistically with the things around them. Adding elements such as switches and LED indicators to a set is also a relatively cost-effective way to build up the background of a scene.
Additionally, prop departments utilise switches and other electromechanical components when they need to create new electronic devices that can’t be sourced as a complete piece, or if they need to make adjustments to an existing device/machine. For example, the prop department working on a sci-fi movie may need to create a device that doesn’t resemble something from this planet.
Components for Set & Prop Design
We have supplied a wide range of components for film and television projects. The majority of these switches have a panel mounting, as this means they can be easily mounted into any panel on a set without having to be soldered to a PCB.
Our LED illuminated components are the most popular choice for set and prop design, as they are very versatile components that stand out clearly, and are customisable with a range of LED colours (including RGB).
Plastic Panel Mount Push Buttons
Our LED illuminated panel mount push buttons are a very popular choice within set and prop design, as they are cost-effective and versatile. We have a wide range of switch types available to best suit the specific needs and aesthetic of the application, but two of our most common switch series’ in this category are:
RJSPS – These push buttons and LED indicators feature full LED illumination and panel cut-out sizes from 8mm to 22mm.
RJSGME – Our series of large, eye-catching push buttons with 24mm panel cut-out size, full LED illumination and a range of cap styles & sizes.
Anti-Vandal Push Buttons
Another in-demand switch type is our range of anti-vandal push buttons, as their sleek metal finish can integrate seamlessly within sets and props, such as high tech or futuristic devices and control panels.
These switches also feature custom finishes (material options and stamped or engraved symbols) and RGB illumination, meaning that you can tailor the buttons to your specific requirements. Plus, our RJS1N1LP series has the benefit of a thinner profile both on and behind the panel, making them ideal for smaller/flatter set pieces.
Toggle Switches
Toggle switches are a great choice when recreating the interior of planes and helicopters or for large control panel style sets, as they can be mounted close together and stand out visually. Toggles are also easy to use, meaning that an actor can interact with them quickly and effortlessly when needed.
We offer metal and plastic toggles, with IP rated and LED illuminated styles available. Additionally, flip guards can be added to many of our toggle switches.
Navigation Switches
Navigation switches can be used to control movement in both digital and physical environments, making them ideal for any prop or set piece that requires a navigational element.
Our range of navigation modules feature LED illumination and consist of multiple push buttons within one unit, or one push button combined with a rotary encoder. We have many styles available to best suit your design requirements.
Film Equipment
Alongside set & prop design, we also supply components to many companies that make film equipment. From cameras and director’s monitors, to lighting and sound consoles, almost all of the electronic equipment needed for film and television production requires switches and other electromechanical components of some kind.
For example, a console used by the lighting or sound department would require a whole board of push buttons, encoders and sliders to control the different levels and settings needed for a specific scene.
Components for Film Equipment
Anti-Vandal Switches
As well as being a popular choice for set design, our anti-vandal push buttons are often chosen for film equipment too. For camera controls, selecting a black anodised aluminium finish with ring or custom LED illumination would add a smart finish and let the switch blend in with the rest of the camera.
Navigation Switches
Navigation switches are another great choice for controls within large film cameras, as they allow for simple navigation of the camera’s settings. For example, the SF39BA features 5 key switches and LED illumination for clear visibility even in darker locations/conditions. Plus, it has an IP65 rating for protection against dust and water damage, meaning that filming can continue, even in adverse weather conditions.
SPG Broadcast Switches
Our SPG series of broadcast switches feature a smooth, silent push button function and full-face RGB illumination, with a range of cap styles available. These buttons are ideal for audio and lighting consoles as they offer clear visibility in low lighting, and their silent function means that they won’t interfere with any live sound recording.
SP86 Piano Switches
Another common type of PCB switch that is used in film equipment is piano-style push buttons. Our SP86 switches have a momentary or latching function and can have 1 or 2 LEDs, making the status of the switch clear.
Due to the unique design of these buttons, a sound or lighting operator can rest their finger on the switch for quick control, and the ‘clicky’ tactile feedback provided means they can be operated blindly.
Conclusion
You may not notice them if you’re not looking for them, but there are countless switches hidden in the sets and props of many of your favourite movies and TV shows; with even more at work behind the scenes. In this blog, we’ve covered the most popular of our switches that are used in film and television applications, but when it comes to creative projects such as these, the design possibilities are endless!
