Switches for Everyday Life

We talk a lot about electromechanical components that go into industrial machinery, audio consoles, medical devices, vehicles and many other specialised areas. However, these components are also the unsung heroes of countless interfaces that we interact with every day, but hardly notice. In this blog we’re going to dive into the devices that we use at home and out and about every day, and the components that make them work.

At Home

The first thing you do in the morning is probably make yourself a coffee. If you’re lucky enough to have a machine that does it for you, you may not think about the components and buttons needed to operate it and deliver your caffeine to you. In fact, there’s switches on most of the appliances that we use every day around the house. The washing machine and dishwasher, oven, vacuum, television and many more devices need electromechanical components to function. Even smart devices like speakers and camera doorbells will usually feature a push button function. Additionally, those of us who live in a block of flats rely on lifts and their buttons to go out and return home every day.

Travelling

Most of us travel every day, whether it’s for work, errands or leisure, but we don’t stop to think about all of the machines and systems that we have to interact with. If you’re in the car, you may have to pay for parking at a ticket machine. When travelling by public transport, you need to push a button to alert the driver of your stop on the bus or to open the doors of a train. Even if you’re walking, you come across push buttons at every pedestrian crossing. Plus, if you need to get money out on the way to work or the shops, you’ll need to use an ATM.

Leisure

Many common leisure activities also require push buttons and other components to keep things running smoothly. For example, if you’re heading to the swimming pool, you might have to press a button to switch on the bubbles in the hot tub. Then if you want to shower afterwards, you’ll usually press another button to turn it on.

Activities like escape rooms and some theme park rides allow you to control and interact with certain elements using various buttons and switches. And if you’re out all day at a theme park or festival, you may need to use a locker or a phone charging dock that require push buttons and keypads to operate.

Components for Everyday Use

Summary

We don’t often take time to think about it, but switches are truly ingrained in our everyday routines. We use devices all day, from when we get a coffee first thing in the morning, to when we cook dinner and run the dishwasher in the evening, and everything in between.
