What are LED Indicators & Pilot Lights

We have a range of panel mount LED Indicators and Pilot lights, ultimately designed to warn or signpost change or when something is in use. For example, it can be done by changing the colour (dual-LED illumination) from red to green or by blinking or flashing. LED Indicators and Pilot Lights are switches that emit light, they are not required to be touched but purely light up.

LED Illumination is an abbreviation of ‘Light Emitting Diode’.  LEDs are energy efficient meaning they typically consume very low amounts of power, whilst giving a significant lumen output. LED commonly use low power consumption, thus low heat generation and have an extremely long service life.

Key Features of LED Indicators & Pilot Lights

There are many types of LED Indicators and Pilot Lights. The two most common materials used for LED Indicators and Pilot Lights are metal and plastic. The metal Indicators and Pilot Lights have a variety of finishes including black anodised aluminium, brass, nickel and coloured finishes. Plastic LED Indicators are often available in a round, square or rectangular shape whereas metal LED pilot lights are often round.

Additional features include:

  • Ø 8mm – 30mm panel cut out
  • IP Rated options
  • Various Voltages available
  • Single, bi-colour or RGB LED options

LED Options

Our quality LEDs are available with single, bi-colour or RGB illumination, see below what this means.

Single LED IlluminationA single LED illumination is the display of a single LED colour.
Bi-Colour LED IlluminationA bi-colour LED switch means it can display two colours together or switch between two LED illumination.
RGB LED IlluminationSwitches that are listed with ‘RGB’ LED illumination, with the combination ‘red’, ‘blue’ and ‘green’, over 16 million hues of light can be achieved. However, some pinks and browns are difficult to achieve.

Our LED Indicators and Pilot lights support a range of LED-illuminated display options. Our Plastic Indicators offer full-screen and split-screen display options.

Full face illumination: The entire surface, usually the top of the LED indicator and Pilot light is illuminated.

Split-screen illumination:  The surface of the LED indicator and Pilot light is split, and both parts are illuminated simultaneously or only one part then the other.

Configuration

Pole and Throw Configurations

We have a range of LED Indicators and Pilot lights can support a range of poles and throws. Our Indicators are commonly referred to as single pole and double pole which relates to the number of circuits that are controlled by the switch. The throw defines how many positions the Indicators poles can be connected to.

  • SPSP – single pole single throw
  • SPDT – single pole double throw
  • DPST – double pole single throw
  • DPDT – double pole double throw
  • 3PDT – Three poles double throw
  • 4DPDT – Four poles double throw

SPST Indicators make or break the connection of a single conductor in a single branch circuit. This switch type typically has two terminals and is referred to as a single-pole switch.

SPDT  Indicators make or break the connection of a single conductor with either of two other single conductors. These Indicators usually have three terminals and are commonly used in pairs. SPDT Indicators are sometimes called three-way Indicators.

DPST Indicators make or break the connection of two circuit conductors in a single branch circuit. They usually have four terminals.

DPDT  Indicators make or break the connection of two conductors to two separate circuits. They usually have six terminals are available in both momentary and maintained contact versions.
