LED Indicator and Pilot Lights

We have a range of panel mount LED Indicators and Pilot lights, ultimately designed to warn or signpost change or when something is in use, for example, it can be done by changing the colour (dual-LED illumination) from red to green or by blinking or flashing. LED Indicators and Pilot Lights are switches that emit light, they are not required to be touched but purely light up. Today, LEDs are used over 1,000 times more and the one of the most efficient and economical way of using light and electricity.

What are LED indicators and Pilot lights?

LED Indicators and Pilot lights are available in round or square shape and a range of sizes. Often LED indicators and Pilot lights are commonly made from plastic or metal. LED Indicators and Pilot lights look very similar to Push Button Switches; however, they do not support momentary or latching function.  Pilot lights can also be referred to as power indicator lights.

Key Features of LED indicators and Pilot lights

  • Ø 8mm – 30mm panel cut out
  • Plastic / Metal material
  • Variety Finishes
  • IP Rated
  • Variety of Voltages
  • LED Illumination Options

There are many types of LED Indicators and Pilot Lights. Let’s start with shape first, LED Indicators are often available in square or rectangular shape whereas Pilot lights are often round. The two most common materials used for LED Indicators and Pilot Lights are metal and plastic. LED Indicators and Pilot lights are available as plastic or metal. The metal Indicators and Pilot Lights have a variety of finishes including black anodised aluminium, brass, nickel and coloured finishes.  For more information about custom finishes, speak to our Sales Engineers directly.

What is LED Illumination?

LED Illumination is an abbreviation of ‘Light Emitting Diode’. LED (light. Emitting. Diode) are electronic components that emit light. LEDs are energy efficient meaning they typically consume very low amounts of power, whilst giving a significant lumen output. LED commonly use low power consumption, thus low heat generation and have an extremely long service life of 30,000 to 100,000 hours.

Types of LED illumination?

Our LED Indicators and Pilot lights support a range of LED illumination display options, from single, dual, to split-screen and full-face illumination.

panel mount, push button switch, illuminated tact switch, without LED illumination, switch with LED illumination, single LED illumination, bi-colour LED illumination, custom etching custom. Momentary function switch with Plastic housing. RJS Electronics Ltd.

Full face illumination: The entire surface, usually the top of the LED indicator and Pilot light is illuminated.

Split-screen illumination:  The surface of the LED indicator and Pilot light is split, and both parts are illuminated simultaneously or only one part then the other.

Single LED Illumination: Refers to the LED indicator and Pilot light displaying one colour.

Dual LED Illumination:  Refers to the LED indicator and Pilot light being able to switch from one colour to another.

IP Rating:

IP Ratings explained by rjs electronics Lt. IP 67, IP68.

Many of our LED Indicators and Pilot Lights components are IP rated.

For more information on IP Rating, see our blog post.

IP Rating: OurLED Indicators and Pilot lights are IP rated (from the front) which means that our Indicators are sealed and/or waterproof, making them hardwearing and durable in a range of conditions.

Let us give you a breakdown of the IP ratings. Click to save or screenshot the table, for future reference. Many of our Panel Mount Indicators are IP rated. For more information about IP ratings, click to read our blog about IP rating.

IP65 Rated
Dust-tight, protected against water projected from a nozzle.

IP66 Rated
Dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets.

IP67 Rated
Dust-tight, protected against water immersion for 30 minutes between depths of 150mm to 1000mm

IP68 Rated
Dust-tight and protected against continuous water immersion.

Pole and Throw Configurations

We have a range of LED Indicators and Pilot lights can support a range of poles and throws. Our Indicators are commonly referred to as single pole and double pole which relates to the number of circuits that are controlled by the switch. The throw defines how many positions the Indicators poles can be connected to.

  • SPSP – single pole single throw
  • SPDT – single pole double throw
  • DPST – double pole single throw
  • DPDT – double pole double throw
  • 3PDT – Three poles double throw
  • 4DPDT – Four poles double throw

SPST Indicators make or break the connection of a single conductor in a single branch circuit. This switch type typically has two terminals and is referred to as a single-pole switch.

SPDT  Indicators make or break the connection of a single conductor with either of two other single conductors. These Indicators usually have three terminals and are commonly used in pairs. SPDT Indicators are sometimes called three-way Indicators.

DPST Indicators make or break the connection of two circuit conductors in a single branch circuit. They usually have four terminals.

DPDT  Indicators make or break the connection of two conductors to two separate circuits. They usually have six terminals are available in both momentary and maintained contact versions.

Switch Configurations:

normally open (NO)  switch has contacts that are open or disconnected in their unactuated (normal) position. A normally closed (NC) switch has contacts that are closed or connected in their unactuated (normal) position.

Switch Configurations

The Indicators are electrical Indicators available in different configurations including two-position On/Off, three-position, momentary, maintained and more.

Momentary ON – describes contacts that interrupt the circuit when the switch is in the normal, open (NO) position.

Momentary OFF – describes contacts that establish a circuit when the switch is in the normal, closed (NC) position.

Alternate ON/OFF – describes a switch where the first actuation turns the switch ON and the second actuation turns the switch OFF.
